Courses

British Sub Aqua ClubShrewsbury Sub Aqua Club offers a full range of BSAC courses and qualifications, which include:

SCUBA DIVING

Depending on demand, we usually run courses twice a year (beginning in October and February).

Lessons involve a mixture of theory and practical studies. The first hour of each week’s training usually takes place in a lecture room at the Quarry Pool in Shrewsbury, followed by an hour’s practical lesson in the pool itself.

See ‘Diary Dates’ for details of forthcoming courses in 2011

Courses last around 8 weeks and at the end of the training, divers go out with instructors to either inland and ocean dive sites to complete their open water training.

Ocean Diver:

Ocean Diver is the British Sub Aqua Club’s entry level scuba diving course and by the end of the course you will be able to dive confidently in controlled conditions to a maximum depth of 20 metres.

*NB: The next Ocean Diver course will begin in January 2012. If you’d like to register your interest, please email gary.coles437@btinternet.com asap, or come along on a Thursday evening for a chat with us at the Quarry Pool between 7.30 and 9pm.

Sports Diver:

Sport Diver is the British Sub Aqua Club’s next level scuba diving course where further training builds upon a sound foundation of open water diving skills and experience with structured, practical lessons.

Qualified Sports Divers are ready to take part in dives with other Sports Divers or higher. Depth can be built progressively to a maximum of 35m after qualifying. Sports Divers can embark on the first stage of the route of instruction.

Dive Leader:

Dive Leader training covers responsibilities and safety of leading other divers. Practical lessons will give divers confidence to deal with emergencies. Leading a dive will develop enjoyment, confidence and experience as a diver.

Depth can be built progressively to a maximum of 50m after qualifying. Dive Leaders are eligible to progress to Open Water Instructor.

Advanced Diver:

The Advanced Diver course further develops knowledge and skills. Divers gain experience in planning dives at different sites and different circumstances.

Additional experience will be gained in using small boats, chartwork. navigation and many other related skills.

BSAC consider this grade as being a fully trained diver. Advanced Divers are eligible to progress to Advanced Instructor.

Hello,

My son, Fergus, is 12 years old and is keen to learn to dive. Fergus is a strong swimmer and a keen Scout. I note a course starting next February. Please advise on suitability, syllabus, duration and cost.

Hi,
My boyfriend and I are hoping to go on holiday to eygypt mid to end of April and were hoping to be able to dive whilst out there. We’d really like to learn beforehand, so could you advise us on what course is suitable and will allow us to enjoy the diving in eygypt, how much the course will cost, when it will begin and how long it goes on for? Thank you, Izzy.

Hi Izzy, thanks for your comment – I’ve forwarded it to our membership secretary, who will be in touch.

We do have an Ocean Diver (beginners) course starting on 25th February 2010, which there are spaces available for, but we always suggest you come and have a Try Dive first to make sure you’re comfortable with the equipment.

Gaynor will be in touch!

Many thanks,

Lara

Margo

Hi there
I am very nervous of deep water and would just love to get over it. I can swim the crawl but not expertly. Do you run any courses for water confidence?
I have been snorkelling in the red sea but it was with a diving instructor and he supported me by just me holding his one finger, I tried letting go at one point and the thought of all the deep water below nearly panicked me.
WE are going back to the Red Sea in December and Colin and me would love to get some tuition.
Kind regard
Margo

Hi Margo

Thanks for your comment, unfortunately this is not something we offer, although many of our members do find their confidence in deep water increases by taking a scuba diving course, though we do ask that you are confidently able to swim 20 metres. It might be an idea for you to pop in and visit us one Thursday night (see our About section for details and times) to see if it’s something you’d like to consider.

Thanks,

Lara

Sophie and Felicity

Hi
Me and my friend are interested in taking an open water scuba diving course in October and wondered what date the course started. I wondered if any prior experience is needed or is it covered in the course and what the costings will be overall.
Thank you

Hi Sophie and Felicity, we have an Ocean Diver course (Open Water is a PADI qualification, and we are a BSAC club which runs a different qualification system) starting next week which I think is now fully booked.

The next one will be in February, and you’d both be more than welcome to come along and have a Try Dive any time before then to see if it’s for you.

No prior experience is required, you just need to have a good level of fitness and be able to swim – we teach you everything you need to know. The cost is £200 which includes a year’s membership to the Club (including all courses and loan of equipment) as well as a year’s membership to the British Sub Aqua Club which is also required.

If you’d like to have a Try Dive, pop along any Thursday evening from 8pm where we meet in the upstairs cafe at the Quarry Swimming Pool – someone from the club will be around to talk you through it :-)

Hi

My boyfriend used to do open water diving a number of years ago and wants to get back into it, so I’m trying to do the leg work for him as a present.

Just wondering if you could help me out with what he could do to get back into it and prices etc.?

Thanks very much,

Ali

Hi Alison, thanks for your enquiry.

Our prices are £150 per year which includes full membership to the club (you can read more about this in the ‘About’ section of our website) and to join, you must first become a member of BSAC (the British Sub Aqua Club) which currently costs £52 per year.

Regarding what your boyfriend would need to do, it depends on what level your boyfiend used to dive at and if he qualified as a BSAC or a PADI diver, as the two organisations are very different and have different course structures.

We are a BSAC-affiliated club, so if your boyfriend decided to join us we could help him convert his PADI qualifications to BSAC – or alternatively, he’d be more than welcome to do our Ocean Diver course which will refresh his knowledge and get him out diving.

I’ve forwarded your enquiry to our two membership officers, Clare and Elly, and one of them will email you asap.

Thanks,

Lara
